An acrostic is a summary written in response to a BIG IDEA (ESSENTIAL QUESTION).  This composition consists of several sentences arranged so the first letters of the first words in each sentence align vertically, to spell a key word in the ESSENTIAL QUESTION.

Example:  What makes a cat a fascinating pet?

 C
ats’ unpredictability keeps their owners engaged.
A  ll cats have a reputation for being clever and quick.
T

trees hold particular appeal for many cats, much to their owner’s dismay.
