The strategies of TheHow2Doc’s program are meant to be the main instructional method rather than supplemental activities utilized only when there is extra time. All of the strategies are rooted in inquiry, and incorporate writing/composition. Recent brain research has shown that the use of questioning serves to “prime” the brain for the thinking needed for comprehension and application. Each strategy is a “process” skill and serves as the “HOW TO TEACH” as opposed to the “WHAT TO TEACH” prescribed by the “standards” which define education today. The first seven strategies, all of which focus on higher level vocabulary, are considered the foundation of this program. When practiced in the sequence prescribed, they provide a predictable scaffold which links all elements of learning and aids students in making the connections needed for comprehension and application to new situations.
