The design of this book is intended to serve as a graphic organizer for exceeding the objectives set forth by the new Common Core Standards (The New Learning Standards), to inspire students’ thinking, and to engage students in dialogue with the text and with each other.
There are many ways to utilize the graphic organizers in this Somebody Wanted But So Then (SWBST) “Little Book”; for example: as an excellent tool for intervention, including summative assessment. Appropriate for all levels, SWBST highlights the literary elements of character, setting, theme/plot, conflict/problem, events, resolution/conclusion, and their relationships. Simultaneously, the strategy illustrates the connections between an outline, a summary, and a retelling, showing how these three can be combined to form a five-paragraph essay.
